The Day before the Ride

Well, it’s the day before I leave on my annual trek from NY to CA and as I look at the national weather, it’s looking like I’ll be heading towards Ohio, Kansas, and Colorado.  Temperatures look like they’ll be reasonable and it appears that the worst areas of rain will be in the northern states.

Of course this is subject to change when I actually get on the bike and leave tomorrow morning.  One thing I like about getting started on my trip is that I no longer have to think about where I’m going – I am where I am and simply deal with whatever comes along.  It’s about the ride, the adventure, and the freedom to go wherever I want to go and change my route at any time without having to worry about a schedule or specific destination.  As long as I’m going in the general direction of California, it’s all good.

This will be my 6th trip to California on a motorcycle. This year’s trip will be different in a couple of ways.  First of all, instead of a Harley Davidson Electra Glide, I’ll be riding the BMW K1600GTL.  Secondly, since I’ve been across the country 10 times (5 times West and 5 time East), many of the places I’ll ride through will seem familiar.   I know what to expect as far as the landscape and weather conditions are concerned.

There will be rainy days, sunny days, hot days, cold days, long stretches of endless flat highways, spectacular mountains, and barren deserts.  Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate all of the amazing places that this country has to offer.   When I took this trip for the first time in 2008, I thought of it as a once in a lifetime adventure.  Now, it’s become something that I look forward to each year.   I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to make this trek each year.
